  • Art – Oils & Pastels

    Develop your artistic skills using a range of oil and pastel mediums. You will cover how to use chalk and oil pastels, charcoals and oil-based paints to create pieces of artwork. This is a practical course and is suitable for all abilities. A list of resources you will need for the course will be provided at enrolment.

  • Nutrition and Health – Introduction

    An introductory course that explores the relationship between eating well and wellbeing. You will learn about the impact food has on your general wellbeing and how to apply simple changes through nutrition. You can progress to the Level 1 Award in Health and Nutrition after successful completion of this introduction.

  • London’s Historic Public Houses

    The course covers the history of famous London’s public houses. Some were around before Shakespeare; others are comparatively recent Victorian additions, but all have fascinating stories and tales to tell. Venture down back streets and alleyways to discover the historic facts about the building and their famous patrons, such as Charles Dickens & Samuel Pepys. The course will include five trips to London to view historic areas including the Docklands, the Southbank, Knightsbridge and the City of London. The costs of travel and any beverages purchased are not included within the course fees.

  • History of London’s Transport: River, Road & Rail

    This course takes you on a journey through the history of London’s eclectic and iconic transport. Whether it’s on the water (from Thames’ ferrymen to paddle steamers), on the streets (from horse-drawn coaches & Hansom cabs to trams, buses and ‘Boris’ bikes) or on the rails (from its great terminals to its world-famous tube). The course includes the story of London’s bridges, man-made canals, ‘ghost’ underground stations and taxi shelters. There will be four trips to London. The costs of travel and any entry fees are not included within the course fees.

  • Building London’s Underground

    This introductory course will look at the world’s first underground railway including its continual development. You will look at the role of art in designing stations and the famous tube map used to this day. The development of the tube and its use during the Second World War will also be explored. Famous personalities relating to the tube will also be introduced including Charles Pearson, James Henry Greathead and MacDonald Gill.

  • Native Americans

    This short course will provide you with an opportunity to explore the lives and history of the native tribes of North America, particularly those living on the plains. You will look briefly at the effects upon native peoples of the westward movement of settlers and the attitude of the US government/people. The course will introduce several famous characters including Sitting Bull, Geronimo, Custer and Sacagewea. Topics will include the Little Big Horn battle, the role of women in society and how native peoples saw the world around them.

  • Female Leaders

    This short course will provide you with an opportunity to visit female leaders through history. You will look briefly at how the roles and perception of women have changed. The course will introduce several famous characters including Elizabeth I, Boudicca, Catherine de Medici and Victoria. Topics will include the perception of female leaders, the changing role of women in society and how having a female leader may have affected international relationships.

  • Empires

    This short course will provide you with an opportunity to look at some of history’s imperial powers including Britain, France and Spain. You will look briefly at how each empire began, including interactions with others. The course will introduce several famous characters including The Duke of Parma, Clive, Napoleon and Sir Henry Lawrence. Topics will include the growth of empires from Rome to the present, Pax Britannica and conflicts between imperial powers.

    Silver Surfers

    This course is taught at a gentle pace and there is no pressure or exam at the end. There is always time to ask questions or go over things again. This course is divided into two parts and is perfect if you want to use computers and think now’s the time to learn! You will learn how to connect to internet, e-safety, using email and there is also an introduction to Word and Excel. The use of tablets is not covered in this course.
